It is time to know how much inches in a meter!

Are you afraid of mathematical language full of difficult words? Don’t worry! Our article is written for everyone. We promise that all of you can understand it without any problems. We will explain this topic clearly, without complicated formulas. Our mission is to make conversions simply for everyone.

Without any further ado, let’s move on to the main part of this article!

How many inches in a meter

We know that the topic of how many inches are in one meter is probably the most interesting for you but we cannot omit also a little part of theory. We gathered in this part only basic facts which you need to know and some tidbits to make it more interesting for you. So let’s start. It is time to understand better meters and inches.

If you are looking for the answer to how many inches equal a meter, you probably know that both a meter and an inch are units of length. In this part we want to tell you something more about each of them.

The meter is a base unit of length in the International System of Units (known also as SI). This unit was defined differently over the years. Nowadays the meter is defined as following: “The metre, symbol m, is the SI unit of length. It is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the speed of light in vacuum c to be 299 792 458 when expressed in the unit m⋅s−1, where the second is defined in terms of the caesium frequency ΔνCs.”

Curiously, this definition has been in use since 20th May 2019. It was redefined in agreement with the International System on Quantities. It took place on the 144th anniversary of the Metre Convention.

The meter can be also written as:

1 m = 9 192 631 770 c/299 792 458 ΔνCs

Where the name “meter” comes from? The “meter” is derived from two Greek words – metreo and metron. Metreo means to measure, to count or to compare. In turn, metron means a measure. Nowadays the meter is sometimes also called “the metre”, especially in the United Kingdom. In the United States it is used mostly as “the meter”.

The meter is equal 100 centimeters and 0.001 kilometers. As you can see, both centimeters and kilometers are formed using SI prefixes. Of course, it is also possible to convert the meter to non-SI units. For instance, one meter is approximately equal to 1.0936 yards.

The inch is also a unit of length but in the Imperial and United States customary systems of measurement. In contrast to the meter, the inch does not have a legal definition. This unit is defined simply as 1/36 yard or 1/12 foot. One inch is also exactly 25.4 mm.

The name “inch” comes from Latin word “uncia” which means one-twelfth. Curiously, the inch was first mentioned in documents dating to the early 7th century. It was the Law of Æthelberht. In this document were gathered legal provisions.

The most theoretical part of this article is already behind us. We think that this information is sufficient. You know a little about these two units and know some tidbits about them. Now we can move on to the more practical part. Then you will know how many inches are in a meter.

How many inches are in a meter

After this part of theory it is time to tell you how many inches per meter. It is a little bit complicated because there is no exact result of how many inches are there in a meter. On the other hand, there is an exact result of how many meters in an inch. Have a look.

One inch is exactly 0.0254 meter. In turn, one meter is approximately 39.3700787 inches. To be more precise, one meter is exactly 1/0.0254. This fraction in decimal notation has an infinite number of digits. That’s why it is usually used as an approximation.

How many inches are in a meter

These two results we can also write in this way:

  • 1 inch = 0.0254 meter,
  • 1 meter = 39.3700787 inches.

Of course, approximations of how much inches in one meter can be different. For instance, if you need an exact result you can use 1 meter = 39.3700787 inches but if you do not need such exact results you can also use 1 meter = 39.37 inches or even 1 meter = 39 inches. It depends on you which approximation you will use in your calculations.

You know now how many inches in a meter stick. We want to tell you also how many inches in a square meter. One square meter is approximately 1550.0031000062 square inches. In this case it is also impossible to give you an exact result. Why? One meter is approximately 39.3700787 inches, so one square meter is an inch multiplied by an inch, that is 39.3700787×39.3700787. We can say that is approximation multiplied by approximation.

These result we can also write in this way:

  • 1 square meter = 1550.0031000062 square inches.

Now you know an answer to this question: a meter is equal to how many inches? You also know how many inches in a square meter, so we can move on to the more practical thing, that means to a conversion factor and a formula which you will need to make your own calculation.
